What is the Tao
I am a meditation teacher and most of my spiritual work is based on the Tao (pronounced Dow). The Tao is a way of life and describes the natural energies present on our planet, energies that have been here since the dawn of time and are accessible to all of us. The Tao is all about connection, balance and flow and the end result leads to Inner Peace.
The natural energies of the Tao are thunder and lake, mountain and wind, water and fire, earth and heaven.
These all combine together to form the Tai Chi or the yin yang. In our daily lives, we connect to the natural energies of the Tao all the time.
When a child feels brave and charismatic, they are connecting with Fire Energy.
When they are loving and nurturing, they are connecting with Earth Energy.
When they are full of imagination, playful and intuitive, they are connecting with Lake Energy.
When they tap into their inner strength and are inspirational, they are connecting with Thunder Energy.
When they are helpful and support others, they are connecting with Heaven Energy.
When they feel confident and compassionate to others, they are connecting with Water Energy.
When they believe in magic and mystery, this is spiritual, and they are connecting with Mountain Energy.
When they are kind and use their brain and feel intellectual, they are connecting with Wind Energy.
When they feel balanced and calm and find their inner peace, they are connecting with Tai Chi Energy.
What is Spirituality?
I define spirituality as connection. Connection to the mysterious and magical things in life. Connection to the natural energies of the Tao that are all around us. A meaningful connection to people, animals, insects and plants. Connection even to inanimate objects because everything has energy.
The book series ‘The Curious Cousins‘ will introduce children to the three spiritual concepts of the Tao:
1. CONNECTION
In the stories, the cousins connect with each other through their ability to meet in their dream life to travel and explore together. On their adventures, they connect with the land, the plants, the insects, and the animals.
2.BALANCE
As they proceed bravely into unfamiliar territory, they experience balance through setting intentions. Setting a goal and believing that what you desire can become real. It is having absolute confidence in what you want to achieve. The cousins in these stories use intention to get together in their dream life and go where they want to go and experience what they dream of.
3. FLOW
The tales introduce children to the concept of being ‘more than your physical body’, of understanding that there is a part of you that is your essence and is not confined. A concept children instinctively understand already. Their dream life is a place that is wide, deep, high, and broad, with no limits. A place where they can be who they dreamed they’d be.
At the end of these tales, my wish is for parents to know that spirituality is part of everyday experience. To know that we are connected to the magical and mysterious natural energies that are all around us, which are a normal part of being a human being on our beautiful planet.
Children already know this.
